Our brickyard is probably the last in Europe where bricks are glazed with table salt. During coal firing in kiln, by high temperature the salt changes on the vapors, which settle on the surface of the brick, creating a protective coating in the form of a matte-glossy shaded brown salt glaze. Salt glazing of ceramics is an old, historical technology. Kitchen pots, barrels for pickling vegetables, wine bottles and folk dishes were glazed in this way even in the 19th century.
